Alexis Rankin is a photographer based in Mackinaw City, Michigan. Most recently, she was a photographer, reporter, and editor at the Mackinac Island Town Crier and the St. Ignace News in the Straits of Mackinac region. In this role she became a trusted and reliable community journalist telling stories that mattered to locals, from city government policy changes to winter theater.

Alexis graduated from the University of Michigan in May of 2020, having majored in the Program in the Environment with a minor in English. While in Ann Arbor, Alexis served as Managing Photo Editor at The Michigan Daily for two consecutive years (2018 and 2019), during which time she managed a staff of photographers, photographed everything from Michigan Football in the Peach Bowl to Hillary Clinton in Detroit, and worked across sections at The Daily toward institutional improvements. Within the photo section, she implemented a photo essay requirement that brought new, detailed projects to the Daily auidence, growing readership.

With her education background, Alexis has worked as an environmental communications associate at Environmental Management Support, Inc., and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions. In these roles she created and edited written materials and graphics for clients including the Environmental Protection Agency.

Alexis has done freelance work and been featured in publications such as The Detroit News, The Atlantic, Automotive News, The Denver Business Journal, The Cheboygan Tribune, The Petoskey News and Review, and Michigan Alumnus. She worked as a peer advisor for the Program in the Environment and obtained a specialization in conservation ecology. Alexis worked as a media/marketing intern with the University of Michigan Biological Station where she combined her interest in photography with her interest in the environment by photographing students in the field. She hopes to pursue a career in which she can combine her skill and passion for photography and writing with the environment, specifically in areas of conservation. Other interests include camping, hiking, rock climbing, watercolors, and yoga.
