Sue Stejskal praises Bagheera upon his successful recall. As part of an initiative funded by the Mackinac Island Community Foundation, Ms. Stejskal is working with Bagheera and Dodger, who are personal pets of two Mackinac Island State Parks employees, to become avian control canines( ACC). Their training includes directional and recall commands that will allow them to be deployed in state park property to deter geese populations from settling.

Dr. Harvey Blankespoor, assisted by Biology of Parasite professor and his son Dr. Curtis Blankespoor, holds a Common Merganser that was removed with her goslings from Douglas Lake as part of research at the University of Michigan Biological Station. Mergansers are known carriers of the parasite that causes swimmer’s itch, so the birds are removed and relocated to larger lakes in order to disrupt the parasite life cycle.

Chad Rouche, bartender and manager at Good Time Charley’s college bar in Ann Arbor Michigan, makes drinks on the first Friday night after Covid curfew restrictions were lifted in the state of Michigan. After working shortened shifts with an 11 p.m close time, the return to full capacity and 2 a.m. closing shifts was a jolt back to pre-pandemic normalcy. Gazing at a row of tickets hanging above the bar well, Chad’s experience making the infamous 64oz “fishbowl” sized drinks kept things moving through the chaos.
