Researching Raptors

The Straits of Mackinac are a point of convergence for travelers moving north or south between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. The highly trafficked crossing point at the Mackinac Bridge is not exclusive to humans, as more than 15 species of raptors, the hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls, fly across this span from March through June on their journey north to breed.

 

Island Horses Migrate to Mainland

Time is marked by tradition on Mackinac Island. The gradual departure of the Island’s seasonal workforce begins as early as mid-August. Even the Island’s four-legged employees have to depart the Island for winter, and that process begins at roughly the same time. After six-months of work to keep the Island functioning, it is time for the horses to relax, play, and eat.

 

Community Theater Essential to Island’s Winter Off-Season

Since the Mackinac Island Community Theater company was reconstituted in 2017, the Island’s off-season is better known to many residents as “theater season.”
