Forest Service, Bay Mill Tribe Share Importance of Prescribed Burns for Forest Health, Fire Safety

The best medicine for an unhealthy forest is fire. This year, the United States Forest Service plans to conduct prescribed burns across approximately 9,000 acres of land in the Upper Peninsula. Prescribed burns, which Hiawatha National Forest fire planner Brenda Dale refers to as “good fires,” are a forestry management tool essential to maintaining a balanced forest and ecosystem. Wildfires are a naturally occurring disturbance that, for decades, were misunderstood by foresters. Years of fire suppression have given way to management policies that embrace controlled burns as a means of promoting new growth, regenerating soil nutrients, reducing accumulated fuel or anything that burns, and reinvigorating wildlife openings.
